QT Resort Falls Creek celebrates the ‘warmth of cool’, featuring a mixture of vintage and modern accents and a thoughtful new colour palette including smoky greys, silvers and neutrals that mimic the silvery stands of Alpine Ash and delicate mountain snowgum views. Spotted touches of colour add to the modernist fit out, notably in public spaces including the innovative Bazaar Marketplace restaurant and the ‘New-York-cool’ Stingray Lounge.

Hotel rooms are kitted out with retro chairs and fabrics, Eames wall clocks and neat small touches such as beautiful anodised aluminum rinse cups and polished chrome tissue boxes in the bathrooms. These complement the wow factor marble finishes and transform what might have been seen as ‘stuffy’ into a more hip, designer feel. Continuing with that theme is one of the most entertaining and well-curated mini bars we’ve seen, comprising everything from microwave Nachos to Go, popcorn, playing cards (QT’s own design) and lip balm, to the best in après ski recovery items: 10 Cane Rum,  Adami Garbél Prosecco (the real deal from Italy), Deep Heat and, in case you’re a hit with your fellow skiers, an ‘Intimacy Kit’.

All of this guarantees a barrel of smiles, while the selection of fine wines and spirits will streamline your relaxation as you enjoy the Kiewa Valley views from your personal outdoor spa on the balcony. Here city energy and wit meet serene wilderness – call of the wild optional.

In terms of its on-mountain location, QT Falls Creek really does have an advantage. Its village square ski-in ski-out location is right next to the Falls Express quad chairlift and the finishing leg of the 2.2km family-friendly Wombat’s Ramble ski run, famous for its night skiing.

Just below the Stingray Lounge, opposite the hotel entrance, is Spa Q, a peaceful oasis whose offerings are far more extensive than its cosy, almost hidden, premises suggest. This travel-weary writer opted to sample two luxury treatments in an attempt to truly unwind: first the Essential Focus Facial and then a Wild Thyme Foot Therapy. The former features a divine Uspa sandalwood scented cleanser that puts one instantly in relaxation mode, an invigorating hydrating compress and rejuvenating facial mask, toning and moisurising, all executed by experienced therapist’s hands.

New 2016 spa therapy packages include: The Snow Queen (150 mins/$345), featuring a Japanese full-body exfoliation and skin hydration plus full body and facial massage. The package is designed to stimulate circulation and the face massage with a hydrating and revitalising elixir with rich floral aroma’s will make your regal beauty shine and your mind relax. The Weekend Warrior (150 mins/$345), features an invigorating bamboo scrub, full body massage and facial therapy designed to slough away dry and flaky skin ahead of a tension relieving massage designed to ease stress and target any areas of tightness.

We love the Wild Thyme Foot Therapy – just the ticket after a hard day’s skiing – is precisely what the doctor ordered. Tangerine and rose body cleanser (also found in your hotel room) and a good hot soak soften the feet in preparation for the Wild Thyme foot pumice and massage. Later a complete arms, legs, head, face and foot massage completed the journey and soothed the soul beyond recognition. It is hands down one of the best spa treatments ever devised, and it is worth every pretty penny.

The impossibly friendly staff at QT Falls Creek manage to quietly attend to your every need without ever imposing or intruding. It is seriously rare, and impressive, to be treated so well in a hotel, from the valet parking to the concierge delivering your bags to your room. The friendly service continues in the Bazaar Marketplace, a virtual world-of-choice dining spectacular. A smörgåsbord fit for kings features everything from Hervey Bay scallops, fat and fresh Ceduna oysters,  Moroccan spiced lamb shanks, braised beef cheek, charcuterie, cheeses, exotic salads and expertly chargrilled grass-fed sirloin steak, sliced and prepared to order. Wonderful.

The wine list here is one of the best on the mountain, and to carry the nightlife action further, the Stingray Lounge exceeds expectations, with its signature ‘Speyside (Whisky) Kick’ cocktail, designed by QT Sydney’s mixologist Jarred Thibault, it’s impressive. All in all, QT Falls Creek has its finger on the pulse.
