Fresh off the QantasLink connection from Sydney, and upon arrival at Sails Resort Port Macquarie, the first thing that hits you is fresh salt sea air, carrying the soft calls of the gulls. With fishing boats tied to their moorings and with the sun slowly setting, there are few destination that match the harmony of this setting.

Situated on a jutting bend of the Hastings River, with a small marina to one side, and an un-touched-by-man wide passage of water flanked with mangroves to the other, this is prime position waterfront accommodation at its best. Smiles are instant as we notice a welcome letter positioned next to a fresh cluster frangipani flowers and a bottle of Cotes du Rhone 2014 vintage wine on the coffee table. Welcome to the sub tropics.

Sails Resort Executive Suite

Our Executive Suite, room 233, takes in views both up, and downstream. To the south, schooners, yachts and on this evening, a local rowing team dominate the foreground. Norfolk Island pines and Port’s low rise apartments and CBD skyline paint a pretty picture in the distance. But its’ the view north, upstream, that is truly captivating. A glassy-still expanse of water reflects a blue sky, dispersed with fluffy cumulous clouds. Pelicans, gulls and finches pass overhead and the mangrove branches reach out, their limbs and leaves skimming the water’s edge. After a peaceful sleep, the morning sunrise is golden, and from the wrap-around balcony, a view of Sails’ lower deck pool/spa can be spied through the spiky bows of lush green palm fronds.

Hastings River Marina, viewed from Sails Resort

The 4.5 star Sails Resort has recently re-opened after a four year reconstruction project that’s ensured both style and luxury dominate. 92 Guest rooms and suites all with individual terraces and balconies share glorious views, with more than 80 percent sighting water. Room decor and colour schemes are influenced by the subtropical seaside location with feature bright-white shiplap panelling, stone benchtops and a range of soothing neutral tones that feel like nature underfoot: perhaps a little like a sandy beach or rainforest floor. The kitchen splashback and bathroom accent tiles are coloured a vibrant turquoise blue and a rainfall shower head coupled with lemon myrtle scented moisture therapy body bars provide an invigorating morning wake up.

One of a collection of exciting new experiences, Essentials will be reporting on a range of food, wine, and nature experiences within the Port Macquarie region throughout autumn and winter 2019.
