If you’re thinking of travelling to the UK in the near future, might we suggest a timely visit to artisan watchmaker designers The Camden Watch Company. This independent British-based brand was founded in the heart of Camden by wife and husband team Anneke Short and Jerome Robert – both previously designers for other leading brands. Currently the couple operate three standalone shops in different parts of the city. Each location is different, but each reflects the retro style of a Victorian age with classically designed, ultra beautiful time peaces to choose from.
While most of their men’s, women’s and unisex watches are available online, two of the locations offer exclusively design watches you cannot buy online and only in-store. And along with their Victorian inspired timepieces, shoppers can also find their Victorian animal inspired tea (or coffee) mugs as well as their Victorian inspired backpacks.
The Camden Watch Company – Camden Store
The flagship store based in the Camden Stables Market was the first store to open in 2015 just a few months after the brand itself launched. It has recently moved into a bigger storefront allowing it to expand into what they call their proper flagship store.
Actor Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock, A Confession, TV series of Fargo, Love Actually, The Office, etc) is a big fan of this location and has purchased more than 10 of their watches.
What you won’t find online or any other location is their special edition dedicated to the Horse Hospital based on their No. 29 design. The design of the Horse Hospital special edition is inspired by the colours and features found on British WWI trench watches; a thick leather strap, a dark dial with bright, legible colours and touches of luminous details.
Camden Market was originally developed in 1839 as the Camden Goods Depot, the London terminus for goods traffic from both the railways and the canals. As the area continued to grow, more warehouses for the goods and more stables for the Victorian working horses moving the goods were needed, leading to the construction of the Stables Yard. In 1883, a two-storey building was erected in the North-West corner of the Stables Yard. It accommodated 92 horses over 2 floors, including 12 loose boxes that were provided for resting tired or injured horses and led to this building becoming known as the “Horse Hospital”.
The Camden Watch Company – Greenwich Store
Opening in July 2018, this location is based in the Southern part of the city south of the River Thames in the historic Greenwich Market.
And with their brand new launch of the GMT collection, the Greenwich Market is the location where you can only buy a very special edition of this watch named… The Greenwich.
Featuring a stunning blue dial, the Greenwich GMT edition is an homage to the rich maritime history of Greenwich and Great Britain in general. In 1880, Greenwich Mean Time become the legal standard time across the island of Great Britain, and has since become the time upon which all other time zones across the globe are based. This unisex timepiece has a 37mm case.
The Camden Watch Company – Shoreditch Store
Located in the Shoreditch Boxpark area of the city having opened in 2017, while this location does not have a special limited edition, is the home to where they met Shoreditch barber Frank Rimer, and created the Thy Barber edition which incorporates the colours of a barber’s wheel into the dial.
Founded in 2014 by the Anglo-Swiss duo Anneke Short and Jerome Robert, The Camden Watch Company timepieces are designed in Camden, inspired by British heritage and the rich industrial past and vibrant present of the local area.
With prices from £69, they use all their high-end expertise to create beautiful yet affordable timepieces, which can be purchased on their website or at one of their three bricks and mortar stores in Camden, Shoreditch and Greenwich.
